The Labeling Law

Category: Legislation

At Boronatic we manufacture and print adhesive labels for food products, such as packaging, preserves, dairy products, fruit, chocolate…
For this reason we contemplate and work according to the Labeling Law.

The Food Labeling Law, ascribed in the European Union Regulation 1169/2011 of October 25, 2011, unifies the labeling regulations for the different member countries of the European Union.

What aspects are covered by the Labeling Law?

  • Minimum font size to be used on the label: 1.2mm in height for containers over 80cm2 and 0.9mm for smaller containers.
  • Compulsory information to be marked on different types of food and packaging, and how to use them in each case:
    • designation of origin of food: obligatory on fresh meat of cattle, sheep, goats and poultry; fruits; vegetables; honey and olive oil.
    • ingredients and possible allergies: Possible allergies should be indicated with a typeface that differentiates it from the list of ingredients.
    • net amount of food
    • expiration date
    • conditions of conservation and use
    • company name and address
    • place of origin
    • instructions for use
    • nutritional information
    • Adaptations according to container type or size

All those food labels that are not governed by the Labeling Law, and that make fraudulent use of sanitary or food identification marks, as well as the placing on the market of food or feed with insufficient or defective labeling, will be sanctioned depending on the type of food safety and nutrition infraction committed.

Infringements are distinguished depending on whether they are minor, serious or very serious, and the amounts of such infringement are set forth in Law 17/2011:

  • Minor infractions, up to 5,000.00 euros.
  • Serious infringements, between 5,001.00 euros and 20,000.00 euros.
  • Very serious infringements, between 20,001.00 and 600,000.00 euros.
